Cut Here

Cut Here, a joint exhibition by Jessica Pearless and Kate Woods presents a singular critique of the traditional art forms of painting, sculpture and photography. By conflating ideas of past and present, both artists demonstrate a singular viewpoint in refreshing and vigorous ways. “That Jessica Pearless has looked back to geometric abstraction and to painting for her new work can be seen as part of this process. She has found in the austerity of Malevich…a European mentor and in Walters a local benchmark for quality in geometric abstract painting.” (Michael Dunn)
Cut Here deftly refers to both the strident geometry of form and delineation of colour in Pearless’ work. In Woods’ work, the title serves different purposes, at once highlighting the literal process of production while referencing the direct imposition of her sharp cubist forms on an apparently innocent landscape.
“Just as Woods’ appropriates…painted landscapes and sculptures to construct a new history, the viewer constructs their own interpretation.” (Molly Samsell)
While both artists are concerned with drawing together genres and ideas from across time and history, their work both stands out from, extends and challenges the traditions of art, displaying both fresh insight and a unique depth of understanding in the process.
