Not Yet Dry

New Zealand artist Helen Calder and German-based artist Volker Saul present new works in painting that question the traditional support structures of the medium. They historically share an approach that strips the elements of painting back to its purest form, concentrating on hue, texture and a high ratio of pigment to vehicle. They preserve the vibrancy of paint resulting in a physiological experience of colour that bathes the space with intense oranges, glossy greens, and skittish pinks. The movement of the paint also determines the visual forms which are decidedly unresolved in Calder's panels and the wall murals and sculptures by Saul. Both artists demonstrate painting's ability to consume or attach itself to the architecture of a space and turn it into it's own object. Saul and Calder cover their surfaces, using paint like an artificial skin. Calder's paintings creep onto taboo surfaces, creating tense and delightful moments, where the naughty globs of acrylic cross its modernist boundaries.

More information to come.
