City Art Rooms, has been conceived as a venue for ambitious artist projects from New Zealand and abroad. City Art Rooms’ missions are:
- to exhibit challenging works of depth and quality
- to bridge the diverse practices of NZ artists with international networks
- to create an accessible environment for appreciators and collectors of art
City Art Rooms is located in the heart of Auckland’s art district, neighbouring the Auckland Art Gallery, in a loft-style venue occupying the entire first level of a 1930 historic building. The space provides a welcoming experience for visitors, offering a reading room along with the two exhibition areas totalling over 300m2. Room one, the larger exhibition area, is suited to solo and major group showings. Room two, the project room, is a focused area for the development of unique pieces and works in a wide variety of media. A window space also features projects and works by gallery artists. Proposals to exhibit in the project room will be accepted from both within and outside City Art Rooms’ stable of artists, with the assessment of proposals favouring projects which maximise the risk-taking opportunities inherent in the space.
